A Reference Aid, Not a Substitute for Your Eye
LetterForge’s calculators — the font pairing suggester, the x-height and line-spacing calculator, the letter-spacing and kerning guide, the type-scale generator, the nib-angle guide, and the baseline grid calculator — are designed to help you plan and check lettering and type-design work. They do not constitute professional design consulting and cannot see your specific typeface, paper, ink, or brief. For finished work — a poster going to print, a commissioned calligraphy piece, or a painted sign — always confirm the result by eye and adjust to taste.
Results Are Rounded Estimates and General Suggestions
The tools apply standard typographic and calligraphic conventions and round their output for readability. That rounding, together with the assumptions of a deliberately simple model, means a displayed value is a starting point, not a guarantee of how a specific typeface or nib will actually render. The font-pairing suggestions in particular are general guidelines based on common classification contrast — they are not the only combinations that work, and personal or brand style should always take precedence.
Why a Result May Look Off
A calculator can return a surprising or unexpected answer when:
- Units are mismatched: entering a font size in points where pixels are expected (or the reverse) changes the answer entirely.
- A nib angle is measured from the wrong reference line: pen angle is conventionally measured from the horizontal writing line, not from vertical.
- A ratio or percentage is entered as a whole number instead of a fraction, or the reverse.
- An x-height ratio for a specific typeface is unknown: the calculator uses the ratio you supply, and typefaces vary significantly in how tall their lowercase letters read.
