Understanding X-Height and Vertical Rhythm
Set two typefaces at the same point size and put them side by side, and one will almost always look noticeably bigger than the other. The culprit is x-height — the height of a typeface's lowercase letters that have no ascender or descender, named for the letter that's usually used to measure it. It's the single biggest reason two fonts at "the same size" don't feel the same size at all.
What x-height actually measures
Every typeface's letters sit within an invisible box defined by the font size, but how much of that box the lowercase letters actually fill varies enormously. A typeface like Verdana, designed for legibility on low-resolution screens, has an x-height well over half the font size — the lowercase letters are tall and open, with short ascenders and descenders. A classic book typeface like Times New Roman sits closer to 45% of the em, leaving more room for elegant ascenders and descenders and a more classical, vertical proportion. Neither is wrong; they're built for different jobs, and the x-height ratio is the clearest fingerprint of which job a typeface was designed for.
Why it matters for legibility
A tall x-height makes the body of a letter — the part that carries most of a word's recognisable shape — larger relative to the overall letter, which tends to help legibility at small sizes or at a distance, on a screen or on a road sign. A shorter x-height, paired with generous ascenders and descenders, tends to read as more refined and is often favoured for long-form book text set at a comfortable size, where the ascenders and descenders themselves help distinguish letters and create a more varied, less blocky texture on the page.
X-height and line spacing are linked
Line spacing (leading) doesn't operate on the x-height directly — it's set as a multiple of the font size — but the two interact constantly. A typeface with a tall x-height and short ascenders/descenders can often run slightly tighter leading before lines start to feel cramped, because there's less vertical stroke reaching up and down to collide with the line above or below. A typeface with a short x-height and long ascenders/descenders often needs a touch more leading at the same font size to keep those extended strokes from crowding their neighbours.
This is why swapping a typeface in an existing layout without adjusting leading is a common cause of a design suddenly looking cramped or unexpectedly loose: the leading was tuned for the old typeface's proportions, not the new one's.
A practical way to think about it
When you're setting type, it helps to think in three numbers: the font size, the x-height as a fraction of that size, and the leading as a multiple of that size. Once you know a typeface's x-height ratio, you can predict roughly how "big" it will read compared to another typeface at the same nominal size, and you can choose leading that actually suits the letterforms rather than defaulting to a single generic multiplier for every typeface you use.
As a rough starting point, shorter lines of text can run tighter leading (around 1.2 times the font size), while longer lines — wider text columns where the eye has further to travel back to the start of the next line — benefit from more generous leading, up toward 1.5 times the font size, to help the eye track accurately from one line to the next.
Putting it into practice
The next time you're comparing two typefaces for a project, don't just look at the point size in your design software — set a lowercase paragraph in each and see how they actually compare on the page. If one looks noticeably smaller, it's very likely the x-height talking, and the fix isn't necessarily to bump the font size; it might just be to adjust the leading, or to pick the typeface whose x-height suits your reading distance and format in the first place.
